The Program

9/11 Day is the largest annual day of charitable service in the United States — the officially recognized federal day of remembrance turned into national action. Every year on September 11, tens of thousands of corporate employees, volunteers, and community members gather in more than fifty cities to pack meals for Americans facing hunger. The goal on the day: 20 million meals.

This will be my seventh consecutive year hosting the NYC flagship 9/11 Day Meal Pack at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the Hudson River — the aircraft carrier turned national memorial where the New York packing floor comes to life each September 11. The organization has trusted the same host at the mic year over year because the packing floor is not a normal event floor — it is a solemn morning of remembrance that has to transition, cleanly, into a high-energy production line where thousands of volunteers hit an ambitious meal-count goal within a fixed window.

What I Do

The 9/11 Day Meal Pack is one of the most emotionally layered events I host all year. It opens with a moment of silence, remarks from 9/11 family members and first-responder representatives, and a national anthem. Then, on cue, the room transitions into a packing production line — measure, seal, box, stack, repeat — for thousands of volunteers working against a clock.

My job — on both the mic and the DJ rig — is to hold both tones at once: the solemnity that never leaves the day, and the momentum that makes the meal count possible. That means DJing music that respects the day rather than fighting it (no party playlists — curated tempo that carries a packing line without disrespecting the moment), pacing announcements around remembrance moments, hyping team captains without turning the room into a party, and keeping every volunteer group synced to the packing rhythm so the goal actually hits. I also handle sponsor recognition, celebrity guest introductions, and live count updates as the meal number climbs on the big screen.

9/11 Day Meal Pack has grown into the largest single-day charitable service event in the country. Year over year, the organization keeps rebooking the same host for the flagship packing floors — the strongest signal a program of this scale can send. This year marks year seven.

Why It Works

National service days on the scale of 9/11 Day cannot afford a host who treats it like a wedding or a corporate holiday party. The room is filled with 9/11 families, first responders, veterans, and thousands of employees who have taken the day off work to serve. The tone has to be earned — not performed. Hosting on the flight deck of the Intrepid — a 900-foot aircraft carrier that served in World War II and Vietnam — is not a neutral venue. It is the tone. Seven years of rebooking means the host at the mic can meet that tone: remembrance first, then relentless momentum on the meal count. That is the assignment. That is why it works.
